When creating the Cappetta & Nolf (2005) review for elasmo.com, there were certain inconsistencies in that paper's citations. For example:
p238: "Otodus vincenti (1878b): Lutétien (= Bruxellien) of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Belgium".1
p245: "In 1874, Winkler (p. 11, fig. 9-10) has figured under the name of Otodus vincenti two teeth of the collection Vincent, on a batch of 11 teeth collected in Bruxellien of Woluwe-Saint-lambert and of Uccle, in Belgium; ..."
p255: "Otodus vincenti (1878)".
Their Winkler references included:
Richard Chandler (pers com Feb 2006) who had been participating in the review of the elasmo.com paper, wrote that we had inadvertently used an erroneous reference by referring to Otodus vincenti as Winkler 1874. He had copies of the description; the date was 1878 and our page references were also incorrect (text pages 25-26, image on plate 2). Pieter De Schutter, one of the authors of the elasmo.com paper, argued he had a copy of the paper and it was 1874.
At the heart of this contradiction is a single paper printed with two dates - Deuxième Mémoire sur des dents de poissons du terrain Bruxellien. Les Héritiers Loosjes, Haarlem. This paper was printed in Archives du Musée Teyler, and evidently, released first as a short standalone paper and later as part of a set of papers.
The 1874 version describes four teeth as "Otodus Vincenti" on pages 10-11 and provides illustrations of two teeth on plate 1. (This is also the paper that describes "Odontaspis Rutoti".)
The four paper set was also printed in the Archives du Musée Teyler. In this publication, the third volume was similarly titled Deuxième Mémoire sur des dents de poissons du terrain Bruxellien. Les Héritiers Loosjes, Haarlem, but was dated 1878. These pages included the same text but were numbered 16-48 and the same illustrations were included on Plate 2.
Richard Chandler pointed out that a century ago, when synonymizing Otodus vincenti with Lamna verticalis, Leriche (1905) worded his reference as:
1874 Otodus Vincenti, Winkler. -- T.C. Winkler. 1, 1876), p. 25, pl. II, fig. 9, 10; Extrait, p. 10, pl., fig. 9, 10.
Richard Chandler also noted that Casier (1946) handled these references differently:
Winkler, T.C. 1873, Mémoire sur des dents de Poissons du terrain bruxellien. |
| (Arch. Mus. Teyler, vol. III, fasc. IV, extraits [1873].) |
- 1874a, | Mémoire sur des dents de Poissons du terrain bruxellien.
(Arch. Mus. Teyler, vol. III, fasc. IV, extraits [1874].) |
- 1874b, | Deuxième Mémoire sur des dents de Poissons du terrain bruxellien.
(Arch. Mus. Teyler, vol. IV, fasc. I, extraits [1874].) |
- 1874c. (Arch. Mus. Teyler, vol. IV, fasc. I, extraits [1874].) |
(Arch. Mus. Teyler, vol. IV, fasc. I [1876], pp. 16-48.).) |
(Arch. Mus. Teyler, vol. IV [1878].) |
I'm uncertain of the rules that govern such matters, but Leriche (1905) was chronologically closer to the circumstances, possibly familiar with them and seems to have favored 1874. [Cappetta (1987) includes Palaeohypotodus rutoti as Winkler 1874]. Whether 1874 is a pre-print or 1878 is a reprint, elasmo.com will follow Leriche (1905) in this matter and use the 1874 date and following references:
Winkler, T.C., 1874a. In:
Archives du Musée Teyler, 1878; vol. IV, (fasc. 1, 1876), pp 1-15; Extraits [1874]. Les Héritiers Loosjes, Haarlem, Belgium.
Winkler, T.C., 1874b. In: Archives du Musée Teyler, 1878; vol. IV (fasc. 1, 1876), pp 16-48; Extrait, 10 pages. Les Héritiers Loosjes, Haarlem, Belgium.

De Schutter (pers com 2006) notes:
"The Bruxellian (Brussel Sand Formation) belongs to the early Lutetian and comes just before the Lede Sand Formation, middle Lutetian (Oosterzele & Balegem). The Brussel Sand Fm. is no longer permanently exposed; except during short periods of construction."
