Triaenodon obesus (RÜPPELL, 1837) is a tropical inshore shark of the Indo-pacific and only member of this genus. According to Compagno (1987), it inhabits the continental shelf & island terraces, usually in waters from eight to forty meters. It favors a reef environment and specializes in hunting bony fish, octopus & crustaceans in the reef's caves, holes and crevices. T. obesus rarely exceeds 1.6 meters in length. The dentition is of a clutching design bearing some 21-25 files per quadrate. The accompanying images (figs 1 & 2) are from a small individual. Note the elongated cusplets and complete cutting edge. The lack of both a broadened blade and compressed root/blade may be an ontogenetic variation, but this remains to be confirmed.
